This appears to be a pretty useful site, but I'm certainly very disappointed that there appears to be no one minding the store, at least over the last year, as I've been trying to urge a correction in the address for my office, the Ohio Coal Development Office. The link to us on this site is a very old one, and hasn't been active for quite some time. My numerous e-mails to attempt to correct this have apparently gone nowhere or been ignored.

Since Homer Hickam's book Rocket Boys, it seems as if a new spark has been lit to educate others about life growing up in a coal camp, as a coal miner's son or daughter, wife or husband, or other relative.

The October Sky Festival was held in CoalWood, WV on Oct. 7, 2000. There I found information about coal mining disasters. Since my dad was a coal miner, killed while providing for his family the only way he knew how, I have begun to "dig up" information about coal mining, including its history. My son, now 15 months old, never had the honor of meeting his belated Paw Paw, so I am gathering info for him. For later, so he will "meet" his Paw Paw through what I give to him.

I wanted to know if there is any info on this web site about the history of mining disasters, links to finding newpaper articles printed about them during that time, etc.

I am particularly interested in Mc Dowell Co, WV; this includes Keystone, Northfork, Crumpler, Vivian, Kimball, Carswell Hollow, Burke Mtn, Welch, Switchback, Maybeury, Ieager, Coalwood, and Davy areas.

Thank you for any help recieved! :-)

To the Coal Miners who risk your lives everyday, to provide for your families, we love and thank you. We are grateful and honored that you do so for your families. My deepest respect goes to you.

In Memory of Ronald Joseph "Joe" Belcher, who touched many hearts and inspired everyone he knew. Oct. 19, 1952- Feb. 15, 1996. I love you, Daddy!!

I am the concerned wife of a coal company employee who has worked in the coal industry for the past 29 years. It appears that the Liberal Environmental Movement has targeted coal as a dying industry based upon theories and scare tactics which are being spread across America. In an era when it is "Politically Incorrect" to attack other groups in our society, such as those who support the abortion rights and the gay movement, why is the premature attack on the coal industry and miners accepted? Coal miners are being accused of everything from destroying the health of children in the northeast, to ruining the mountains of West Virginia, to endangering life on Planet Earth by causing Global Warming. Is this fair for men and women who have done nothing except work everyday to help this nation reach the heights of development and economic success through their efforts. I for one, am tired of hearing my husband's job being degraded everyday.

I believe it was coal and you poured a mixture on to it and a chemical reaction occurred creating amazing colors and crystals. This new format sucks wrt coal. Change it back or please let me know what I am doing wrong. I can't get useful COAL news any longer. Thanks!

My company American Mining Electronics,Inc. (AME) is looking for general information on mining operations where out-of-seam dilution or other cutting control problems exits. AME manufactures horizon cutting control equipment that will eliminate or reduce many of these problems, bringing economies and generating cost savings to operations. Some of these savings amount to as much as $1 to $2 per ton of coal.

I am currently researching the problem of spontaneous combustion in coal during mining, storage and transport. I would welcome information about any aspect of spon com, particularly relating to rail, barge and sea transport. It appears that very little has been published on this, probably for legal reasons. Does anyone know otherwise?

Excellent ideas, but I can't access some of the links eg the investor channel. Are they out of date, or is my browser not compatable?
